Find the Umbrella on the Fence
Our free Midtown walking tour starts on the corner of Bryant Park at 6th Avenue and 42nd Street. The one thing guests most often get wrong: we meet outside the park, not inside it.

At 6th Ave & 42nd St — across from Whole Foods, on the Bryant Park side but on 6th Ave.

Outside the Park — Not Inside
Bryant Park is big, and it’s easy to walk in and wait by the lawn, the fountain or the library terrace. Please don’t — your guide won’t be there. The meeting point is on the outside edge of the park, along 6th Avenue, right at the 42nd Street corner.
Wait here
- On the 6th Avenue sidewalk, on the park side of the avenue — Whole Foods is directly across the street.
- By the Wafels & Dinges kiosk at the 6th Avenue edge of the park, near the 42nd Street corner.
- Next to the park fence, where the orange-and-black Statue of Liberty umbrella is usually hanging.
Not here
- Inside the park — on the lawn, by the fountain or at the tables.
- At the New York Public Library steps on 5th Avenue.
- Already inside? Walk back out to the 6th Avenue sidewalk and head to the 42nd Street corner.
How to recognize your guide
Look for the orange-and-black Statue of Liberty umbrella. Before the tour it’s usually hanging on the park fence beside the kiosk; when the group is ready to start, your guide holds it up so everyone can gather.

How to Get to the Meeting Point
Prefer turn-by-turn directions? Open the meeting point in Google Maps and navigate straight to the corner of 6th Avenue & 42nd Street.
By Subway
- B, D, F, M to 42 St–Bryant Park. Use a 42nd Street exit and you’ll come up right by the meeting point.
- 7 to 5 Av. Walk west along 42nd Street, with the park on your left, to 6th Avenue.
- 1, 2, 3, N, Q, R, W, S to Times Sq–42 St. Walk east along 42nd Street to 6th Avenue (about 5 minutes).
From Grand Central
- Exit onto 42nd Street and walk west.
- Cross 5th Avenue, passing the New York Public Library, and keep going with Bryant Park on your left.
- Stop when you reach 6th Avenue (about 10 minutes). The meeting point is right on that corner — don’t turn into the park.
From Times Square
- Walk east on 42nd Street toward 6th Avenue.
- Whole Foods is on the corner on your side of 42nd Street — cross 6th Avenue.
- You’re now at the Bryant Park corner. Look for the kiosk and the umbrella on the fence.
From Penn Station
- Exit onto 34th Street and walk east to 6th Avenue.
- Turn left and walk north on 6th Avenue for 8 blocks (about 15 minutes), staying on the right-hand (east) side.
- At 42nd Street, Bryant Park is on your right and Whole Foods is across the avenue. Meet your guide on the sidewalk by the kiosk.
