Times Square, New York, NY

Here are a few things you may not know about Times Square

🗞️ 1. The First Ball Drop Was in 1907

The world-famous New Year’s Eve Ball Drop began in 1907 to celebrate the New Year. The first ball was made of iron and wood and lit by 100 light bulbs. Today’s version is 12 feet wide, weighs nearly 12,000 pounds, and is covered with 2,688 Waterford crystals! BUT the celebrations started before that for a very diferent reason! You’ll find out more on our tour =)

💡 2. It’s One of the Brightest Places on Earth

So bright, in fact, that it’s visible from space! Times Square’s billboards and LED signs are so vibrant that local zoning laws require buildings in the bowtie-shaped area to have illuminated signage—it’s part of the charm.

🎭 3. It’s the Gateway to Broadway

Times Square is the front door to the Broadway Theatre District. Within just a few blocks, you’ll find the Broadway theaters, some of which have been hosting performances for over a century.

👥 4. It’s One of the Most Visited Places on Earth

Times Square draws over 50 million visitors annually—that’s more than the entire population of many countries! On average, over 300,000 people pass through it daily.

📸 5. The Naked Cowboy Is a Times Square Fixture

Dressed only in tighty-whities, boots, and a cowboy hat, The Naked Cowboy has been serenading tourists with his guitar since the late ’90s. He’s become a quirky symbol of Times Square’s playful spirit. Try to spot him posing on the streets!

🖼️ 6. It Has a Permanent Art Program

Yes, Times Square isn’t just ads—it’s also home to public art installations, live performances, and rotating digital artworks through the Times Square Arts initiative. It’s a stage for both the commercial and the creative.

🧍‍♀️ 7. It Was Turned Into a Pedestrian Plaza

In 2009, Times Square began its transformation into a more pedestrian-friendly zone. Broadway was closed to car traffic between 42nd and 47th Streets, and today you’ll find colorful chairs, performers, and space to enjoy the buzz without dodging taxis.

🎥 8. It’s a Movie and TV Icon

Times Square has appeared in countless films and TV shows, including:
